WhatsApp dating groups: what to know before you join
Lots of people look for WhatsApp dating group links or number lists because they want to meet someone without installing yet another app. The idea makes sense: WhatsApp is already on your phone and you use it every day.
In practice, public dating groups mostly work against you. This guide explains why, what to watch out for if you join one anyway, and how you can meet people on WhatsApp without handing your number to strangers.
How these groups usually work
Someone creates a group and posts the invite link on a website, a forum or social media. Anyone who taps the link is in, often hundreds of people. Nobody checks who joins, admins come and go, and the same links get copied from site to site long after the group has turned into spam.
The problems with public dating groups
- Everyone sees your number. In a normal WhatsApp group, every member can see your phone number and message you directly, including people you never wanted to hear from. Leaving the group does not remove your number from their phones.
- Fake profiles and bots. Stolen photos and automated accounts are cheap to make. Many "members" exist only to push links, paid content or scams.
- Scams. Typical patterns are "verification fees", gift card requests, crypto "investments" and people asking you to forward a code you received by SMS, which is how WhatsApp accounts get hijacked.
- Noise instead of conversations. Big groups fill up with the same copy-pasted messages. The people you would actually like to meet usually leave first.
- No choice. You cannot decide who writes to you, and nobody checks whether the other people in the group are adults.
What about WhatsApp number lists?
Lists of "WhatsApp numbers" for dating are usually scraped from the web or simply made up. The people behind real numbers never agreed to be contacted. Messaging them is unsolicited, and if they report you as spam, WhatsApp can ban your own account.
A better way: match first, then chat on WhatsApp
Whindr keeps the part people like about WhatsApp dating, the chat app you already use, and drops the group. You create a profile by logging in with WhatsApp or your email, then browse people near you and like the ones you fancy.
A match only happens when both of you like each other. Your number is never on your profile and never in a group: only a mutual match who unlocks your contact can see it. From there you talk 1:1 on WhatsApp.
Our team reviews uploaded photos and removes the ones that break the rules, and you can report any profile from the app. The team looks at every report.
If you join a group anyway
- In WhatsApp, set Settings → Privacy → Profile photo, About and Last seen to "My contacts", so strangers from the group see less of you.
- Under Privacy → Groups, choose who can add you, so you are not pulled into new groups without asking.
- Never send money, gift cards or any code you received by SMS, whatever the story.
- Do not share your address, your workplace or your live location with someone you only know from a group.
- Block and report spam right away: open the chat, tap the name, then Block or Report.
